POLL: What is your favorite sport? America's is the NFL, by far
Mike Hlas Jan. 25, 2011 12:25 pm
The Harris Poll's annual survey of Americans' favorite sports is out, with no surprises to my thinking.
It goes like this:
Pro football 31%
Baseball 17%
College football 12%
Auto racing 7%
Pro basketball 6%
Hockey 5%
Soccer 4%
Men's college basketball 4%
Men's golf 2%
Track and field 2%
Bowling 2%
Men's tennis 2%
Boxing, horse racing, women's tennis and swimming 1% each
Women's pro basketball 0%
Like I said, no surprise. The NFL has been masterful over the last quarter-century or longer when it comes to setting up drama in its regular-season and playoff formats, and by setting up parity with free agency, the draft, and schedules. This season's playoffs have been full of good stories, from the Seahawks' stunning upset of the Saints to the Packers' run through three road games, to the Jets updending the Patriots.
In 1985, pro football nudged out baseball, 24 percent to 23. Now, college football is closer to baseball than baseball is to the NFL.
Men's college basketball just doesn't move the needle much. It's down 2 percent from six years ago, There's a huge game tonight (Tuesday) in the Big Ten, Ohio State against Purdue. I might look in on it. Might not.
What is your favorite sport, and this means as a spectator?
