On Iowa Daily Briefing 6.14.12 -- Preliminary hearing set for Garmon; Iowa reaction

Jun. 14, 2012 11:59 am
The next bit of news on Iowa running back Greg Garmon's arrest for misdemeanor drug possession in Erie, Pa., dropped today.
According to the Erie Times-News, a preliminary hearing has been set for July 18 for Garmon and Delton Williams. Each faces misdemeanor charges of simple possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to the criminal dockets. Garmon also was cited for driving with an expired registration.
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz hasn't issued any sort of statement on the situation. Iowa's upperclassmen offered advice Wednesday to their new teammate.
"You just talk to [incoming freshmen]," senior cornerback Micah Hyde said. "You're in college now, you have to mature. That's No. 1, that's the big thing. You just have to pay attention and listen.
"When you're not here at the complex, there's no school, basically just chill and hang out with your teammates. That's basically it. We're here working out at the complex for a couple of hours and then we're off for the rest of the day. If a freshman doesn't have a job, he can just sit in and hang out with his teammates.
"Don't do anything over the top when you first come in. . . . It's not their time to shine right now. It's just work-out time in the summer. Don't do anything to hurt the team."
Quarterback James Vandenberg said it's a matter of common sense, growing up.
"As soon as you get here, you know that stuff isn't tolerated," Vandenberg said. "It's up to the older guys to self-discipline and make sure everyone knows the rules. Everyone wants to move forward in this program. That kind of stuff can't be tolerated and we can't let it happen."
Iowa has had a quiet run as far as the arrest blotter goes. No incidents so far this summer.
"That's the way it should be," Vandenberg said. "We understand the fishbowl in Iowa City and in the summer, it's empty. You have to be really careful and hang out with guys who are doing the right things."

-- We'd be nuts not to promo our own stuff once in a while, right? After much anticipation, here is the fleshed-out story on James Vandenberg's successful hunt of a 350-pound bear in Saskatchewan a couple weeks ago, as told by Marc Morehouse.
I side with what Hawkeyes tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz said about the matter:
“I've hunted in my backyard with a BB gun. I've never been out sitting for hours waiting for something to run by. A bear, 350 pounds? I wouldn't mess with it.”
-- The workplace of former Iowa/current Oakland Raiders tight end Brandon Myers is near the site of this weekend's U.S. Open golf tournament, San Francisco.
Myers' pick to win in this csnbayarea.com story?
"Iowa boy. Zach Johnson."
"He's been to Iowa to some of our meetings and some of our games," Myers said of Johnson, "so, I'm definitely rooting for him."
Myers is entering his fourth NFL season. Pretty good for a sixth-round draft pick from Prairie City, Iowa.
-- Nebraska fired men's basketball coach Doc Sadler in March. Kansas Coach Bill Self hired him Wednesday to be the Jayhawks' director of basketball operations.
Sadler's a good coach. Self, like most smart leaders, surrounds himself with good people.
-- Michigan State has caught the eyes of more football recruits after its fine season last year.
Says who? Says Michigan State.
Mark Snyder of the Detroit Free Press has the story.
-- Illinois defensive end Michael Buchanan called it "a mishap." Illinois sports information director Kent Brown called it "a fight."
Whatever it was, Buchanan got a broken jaw out of it.
“He'll get himself ready, and he'll get himself right,” Illinois Coach Tim Beckma said in Bob Asmussen's story for the Champaign News-Gazette.
Said Beckman: “He's a little distraught by it. Of course, nobody wants to break their jaw.”
-- There was good news for Illinois Wednesday, however.
High school senior-to-be Maverick Morgan of Springboro, Ohio, gave a verbal commitment to the Illini's men's basketball program. Morgan is 6-foot-10.
Maverick Morgan is a great name. Not as good as incoming
Drake freshman Daddy Ugbede, but still great.
Erie, Pa., running back Greg Garmon is scheduled to arrive in Iowa City for his freshman year at Iowa this weekend. A preliminary hearing has been set for July 18 for the misdemeanor drug possession charge he faces. Iowa upperclassmen have his back. (Pittsburgh Sports Report).
