Occupy Cedar Rapids: It's on!
Mike Hlas Nov. 3, 2011 11:11 am
I was driving home from work Wednesday night, on First Street NW. I drive on that street five or six days a week. It's not a street most Cedar Rapidians see much, and they'd probably try to avoid it if given a choice.
The street hugs the Cedar River. It was flooded, obviously, in 2008. Nearly everyone who lived on that street no longer does. But there is an intrepid soul or two who returned. And near one of their houses, I saw tents and a sign. No people were in sight, though. It was rainy and chilly.
It was none other than Occupy Cedar Rapids.
Which delights me. I live only about a mile-and-a-half from Occupy Cedar Rapids. Let's have something newsworthy on my side of town, a side that some people in my city shrug off.
If nothing else, it's nice to have something new to look at on First Street NW. For three years, it's been so bleak, so barren. Some colorful tents and some human beings can only help the neighborhood.
There isn't much car traffic on the street, though. I don't know how many people in Cedar Rapids are ever going to be aware of this. And winter's coming. Fast.
I hate winter.
Oh, one more thing: Question everything!
