Now here's a testy Iowa press conference
Mike Hlas Sep. 15, 2011 4:19 pm
That thing with Kirk Ferentz Tuesday and his responses to questions about Ferentz's overtime strategy and Derrell Johnson-Koulianos -- that was nothing.
Not compared to one of Hayden Fry's occasional releases of steam at a Tuesday press conference when he was Iowa's coach, anyway. I was on the receiving end of a scolding or two from Fry, and it could turn the state against you real fast.
The writer who agitated Fry for whatever reasons in the following video, however, was Jim Ecker when he was with the Gazette, not I, though Fry does mention my name in his tirade.
When his players were taking heat from outsiders, Fry would always find a way to deflect it elsewhere. I hope those players fully realize that.
He laughs about those blowups now. He says we were doing our jobs, and he was doing his. He was right.
By the way, Fry has repeatedly invited me to his home in Mesquite, Nev., over the last few years. I hope I get there someday, because he's an enjoyable guy to be around. Always was. Well, almost always. (He would laugh at that, too.)
Thanks to a friend in Sioux City for sending me a link to the video. No, it wasn't Adam Woodbury.
One more thing, I had nothing to do with the title of the video, and would remove it if I could.
