Notes from Maine game notes . . .

This is the first two deep and it, as it is every year, is a work of fiction. Undisclosed injuries, another week of practice and pure obfuscation make these "for entertainment purposes only." 

Several slashes here, most notably quarterback between Jake Christensen and Rick Stanzi. The left side of the offensive line is a slash. Tackle Bryan Bulaga might be nursing his bruised knee, so he's a slash with Andy Kuempel. Left guard is slashed between Julian Vandervelde and Dan Doering, just as it was last season. Maybe this means Doering's injury, or whatever kept him out of Saturday's scrimmage, isn't serious. Or maybe not. There are some serious rumors out there that say he's out. I just know that he didn't play Saturday. Center is still a slash, but just going by the open practice and the Big Ten Network practice special and the photos Hawkeyesports.com has put out, I can't imagine the job not going to Rob Bruggeman.

On defense, middle linebacker is still a slash between Pat Angerer and Jacody Coleman. On Saturday, Angerer looked as good as he ever has. Strong safety is a slash between senior starter Harold Dalton and sophomore Lance Tillison. I'm not sure how to handicap either of these races, but I would put a quinella box on Angerer and Dalton.

No Shonn Greene? Didn't Ferentz just say he was the No. 1 back Saturday?

Daniel Murray appears to have won the kicking job, or at least some portion of it.

Drew Gardner is listed at right cornerback, ahead of Jordan Bernstine who limped off the field Saturday.

No TE Tony Moeaki (broken foot) or WR Trey Stross (hamstring), which isn't surprising. They were out Saturday.

Former Iowa defensive tackle Anthony Herron will be an analyst for the Big Ten Network's broadcast of next Saturday's Maine game. Herron lettered at Iowa from 1997-2000.

Week 2, the Florida International kick off is 11 a.m. at Kinnick on the BTN. But that's been out there for a while.

DT Matt Kroul's streak of 37 starts is the third longest in the Big Ten, behind Wisconsin's Kraig Urbik and Purdue's Sean Sester both of whom have 38 starts.
