Nebraska's indoor football facility: The Hawks Championship Center
Mike Hlas Nov. 21, 2011 2:48 pm
Could this be? Could Nebraska have named its indoor football (and other sports) facility after its new Big Ten rival in Iowa?
The Hawks Championship Center:
No, the Hawks Championship Center isn't named for the Hawks of Iowa. Rather, it's named for Howard and Rhonda Hawks of Omaha.
This isn't the Howard Hawks who directed many Hollywood hits. He had some biggies, didn't he?
Howard Hawks of Omaha, as his bio on the University of Nebraska's Board of Regents site tells us, is a man of means. He is founder and chairman of Tenaska, an independent energy company known for its expertise in power plant development, ownership and operations; natural gas and electric power marketing; natural gas exploration and production; and private equity fund management.
In other words, he probably doesn't ride with sportswriters.
The baseball field at Haymarket Park, Nebraska's home stadium, is named Hawks Field. UNL's College of Business Administration has an endowed Chair in Business Ethics and Leadership named for Hawks. He was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the college in 2004.
Wouldn't it be fun if Iowa had a big donor named Herbert Husker?
