Jordan Stoermer of Iowa City West/Kirkwood to walk on to Iowa's men's basketball team

Jordan Stoermer, a first-team all-state player for Iowa City West in 2008, will walk on to the University of Iowa men's basketball squad this year.
Stoermer is a 6-foot-2 guard who spent the last two seasons playing for the Kirkwood Community College team that was
second and third in the last two Division II National Junior College tournaments.
He averaged 10.7 points for the Eagles this season, and made 79 three-pointers.
"I began the summer calling around," Stoermer said Monday. "Coach Bergy (West High Coach Steve Bergman) and Coach Wags (Kirkwood Coach Doug Wagemester) were trying to help me get my name out there."
Stoermer called Iowa's coaching staff, but was told the Hawkeyes wouldn't make decisions on walk-ons until later this summer. But then Iowa State's staff gave him a call a few days ago, and he relayed that information to Iowa.
"A couple hours later, they called me back and asked if I wanted to walk on," Stoermer said.
"I want to study engineering and I've always wanted to be a Hawkeye," he said. "Just going to school there was good enough since they've got a pretty good engineering program, but I wanted to at least try to walk on.
"You never really know with walk-ons, but it would be amazing if I got a chance to play a couple minutes. I'm going to work my butt off."
