Travis Schoening is an Iowa State grad making his living in Chicago as an entrepreneur and self-employed website developer.
His alma mater might lose its conference, might lose its BCS standing and might lose millions.
So, Schoening and a group of four or five ISU pals did something.
They give you ISUtoBig10.com.
Schoening knows it's not going to solve ISU's problems, but it was better than sitting around doing and nothing.
"It's an unsettling feeling," Schoening said Wednesday. "We don't know what's going to happen. There are a lot of scenarios out there where Iowa State just kind of gets swept under the rug. That's not going to sit well with me or any Iowa State fan if that happens."
The website was a spur of the moment. Schoening and friends put it up Tuesday night in a couple hours.
"One of my friends was on CycloneReport.com last night," he said. "He said people were compiling a lot of good idea on why Iowa State would fit well in the Big Ten. He said we should compile all those and put them up on a website.
"Hopefully, it'll gain some momentum and I'll keep updating it until I have a reason not to."
That could come sooner rather than later. Reports out of Omaha have Nebraska possibly bolting for the Big Ten as early as Friday. That could be the piece that puts the Big 12 into Jenga mode, with the Pac-10 waiting to pass out invitations to as many as six teams, including Texas and Texas A&M.
The website has posts on Iowa State's alumni proximity to the Big Ten footprint, ISU's traveling fan base, ISU's prowess in wrestling and AAU status.
"Probably, 95 percent of the people who go to the website will think it's a joke," Schoening said. "That's unfortunate. We do have a history, we do have success. We're just trying to make that known a little more. Plus, there's more to Iowa State than athletics."
One line going around Twitter this week said something to the effect, "Hey, we're Iowa State. We invented something called the computer. You know about computers, right?"
"Yeah, that's had a little bit of influence on the world," Schoening joked.
Schoening is realistic. He knows this is a longshot. He knows the Big Ten probably won't hand out an invite. Reports on Wednesday had the conference focusing on Nebraska, Notre Dame and Rutgers or Maryland.
"It's probably sub 10 percent," he said. "There's very little chance. . . . I'm realistic, it's not a very good chance, I don't think, but I still think there is a small, slight chance and if there is a chance, I think that would be the best place for Iowa State to end up."
