Iowa State 35th in college football attendance

Sep. 19, 2011 5:08 pm
It's very early, and these attendance figures are skewed by who teams have played at home. But, you either have a core of interested fans or you don't.
All that said, Iowa State ranks 35th in college football attendance so far, with two capacity crowds. The Texas game at ISU on Oct. 1 figures to be a sellout as well.
Iowa State is fifth in Big 12 attendance with an average of 55,379. That's ahead of Oklahoma State (55,018), Texas Tech (51,792), Kansas State (50,388), Kansas (44,756) and Baylor (43,422).
The complete figures are at this site.
Counting TCU, which enters the Big East (if there is a Big East) next season, Iowa State has higher attendance so far this season than at 34 other schools in BCS conferences, including eight from the Pac-12 and Big East, seven from the ACC, and five from the Big Ten (Minnesota, Illinois, Purdue, Indiana and Northwestern).
Again, the numbers are skewed because some teams haven't yet had a brand-name opponent. But, those of you in Hawkeyeville who think Iowa State should get relegated to Non-BCS Land should know the Cyclones are outdrawing programs that played in the Rose Bowl (TCU) and the Orange Bowl (Stanford) last year.
ISU would be ahead of every Big East team in attendance if West Virginia didn't sell beer at its home games. West Virginia is just ahead of Iowa State in attendance, with slightly less than 1,000 fans per game.
