Iowa No. 1? Two BCS computer formulas say yes.
Mike Hlas Sep. 28, 2009 4:20 pm
Thanks to Rick Bozich, the fine sports columnist of the Louisville Courier-Journal, for doing the legwork at his blog here.
Rick wrote: Four of the six computer polls used in the Bowl Championship Series formula are out -- and three different teams are ranked Number One. One team -- the 4-0 Iowa Hawkeyes -- tops two of the four computer polls.
Here are your candidates:
Sagarin: Iowa, which barely beat Northern Iowa, but won at Penn State Saturday. Please note that Florida is atop both of the formulas that Jeff Sagarin prefers, but that Iowa is first (and Florida is seventh) in the formula that the BCS counts.
Billingsley: Texas
Colley Matrix: Iowa
Massey: Florida.
I (the gatekeeper here at the Hlog) say this tells us two things:
1. Computers can be just as kooky as the coaches who voted Penn State ahead of Iowa, California over Oregon and Oklahoma State over Houston this week in their USA Today poll, ignoring on-the-field results.
2. It's still September.
