Interesting factoids about Iowa-Michigan series
Oct. 13, 2010 11:18 am
Saturday's game marks the third time since 1984 Michigan has scheduled Iowa for homecoming. Both times Iowa beat Michigan.
In 1990, Iowa beat Michigan 24-23. In 2002, Iowa blasted Michigan 34-9.
Also, during all five BCS-caliber bowl trips for Iowa in the last 30 years, the Hawkeyes have beaten Michigan and most of them were epic victories.
- 1981 -- Tom Nichol's three field goals topple Michigan 9-7 en route to the Hawkeyes' first Rose Bowl since the 1958 season
- 1985 -- In the 1 vs. 2 matchup at Kinnick Stadium, Rob Houghtlin's last-second field goal lifts Iowa 12-10 and to an eventual Rose Bowl berth
- 1990 -- Iowa's 24-23 win propels the Hawkeyes to their third (and final) Rose Bowl under Hayden Fry
- 2002 -- Iowa's 34-9 victory became a statement game for that season, which led to an Orange Bowl berth
- 2009 -- Brett Greenwood's last-minute interception preserves a 30-28 win and helps Iowa earn its second Orange Bowl berth
