Hlas' Top 25 ballot for Week 6
Mike Hlas Oct. 11, 2009 12:45 pm
Had Florida lost at LSU, I was going to jump Alabama from third to first. You beat Virginia Tech and you win convincingly at Ole Miss, you've done more than Texas has this season.
So far.
But the point is moot. Florida stays at the top by winning at LSU.
And now, my ballot, with the team's AP rank in parentheses:
1. Florida. (1) We've been over this already.
2. Alabama. (2) Ditto.
3. Texas. (3) Oklahoma-Texas is Saturday, and it could be a most excellent game.
4. Virginia Tech. (4) Added another good win to its file by obliterating Boston College.
5. USC. (6) Trojans are at Notre Dame Saturday. Someone's going to get hurt.
6. Boise State. (5) The Broncos are at Tulsa Wednesday. The next ranked team Boise State plays will be, well, in its bowl game.
7. Ohio State. (7) Got outgained about 2 to 1 and still put a 31-13 knot on Wisconsin.
8. Miami. (9) Wins over Georgia Tech and Oklahoma look even better now. Losing at Virginia Tech remains no crime.
9. Iowa. (11) Is this a No. 9 team? I don't know. I know what a friend e-mailed me: "2-0 in the Big Ten with wins over Penn State and Michigan. Not bad." I think that's the lead to my Monday column as I read that.
10. Cincinnati. (8) Unbeaten. It's a good team that can solidify its status with a win at South Florida Thursday in Tampa. Tampa, by the way, is not in south Florida.
11. Nebraska. (15) The Huskers had no problem with Arkansas State. Just think if they had held on to win at Virginia Tech.
12. TCU. (12) Unbeaten.
13. Oregon. (13) Ducks didn't lay an egg at UCLA, but did little offensively.
14. LSU. (10) I never thought LSU was all that before the Florida game, and it wasn't.
15. Penn State. (14) Nittany Lions host Minnesota Saturday. Gophers have won 4 of last 6 vs. PSU.
16. Oklahoma. (20) If Sooners lose to Texas, they could be best 3-3 team in college football history.
17. Kansas. (17) Not at all impressive in last two games, home wins over Southern Mississippi and Iowa State. But unbeaten is unbeaten.
18. Georgia Tech. (19) Hosts Virginia Tech Saturday in one of many great games on tap this week.
19. Utah. (24) Rallied to win at Colorado State in sub-freezing temperatures.
20. Oklahoma State. (16) Won at Texas A&M for just the second time since 1983.
21. South Florida. (21) USF defensive coordinator Joe Tresey was fired by Cincinnati Coach Brian Kelly at the end of last season.
22. BYU. (18) I started running out of teams I wanted to rank right after South Florida.
23. Wisconsin. (not rated) The Badgers could have beaten Ohio State, which is odd to say about a team that lost 31-13.
24. Houston. (23) The wins over Oklahoma State and Texas Tech ought to count for something.
25. West Virginia. (NR) I was tempted to use this vote for Northern Iowa. If the Panthers keep winning, the temptation will overcome me.
South Carolina is No. 22 and Notre Dame 25 on the AP poll. I don't see what the Gamecocks have done to deserve it. But you could say the same about Wisconsin or West Virginia.
