Dec. 6, 2011 7:09 pm
CEDAR FALLS - Northern Iowa backup Chip Rank was fouled sinking a 3-pointer and converted the ensuing free throw to help give UNI a 32-27 lead against Iowa at halftime at McLeod Center.
With the Panthers (7-1) holding a three-point lead, Rank was in the corner and drilled the shot with 25.5 seconds left in the half. Melsahn Basabe fouled Rank, allowing him to complete the four-point play.
Iowa (5-3), which is playing without starting point guard Bryce Cartwright, started strong, scoring on its first five possessions to take a 10-0 lead to start the game. But the Panthers methodically rallied, forcing Iowa turnovers on the next three offensive possessions.
Marc Sonnen and Jake Koch each hit 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to give the Panthers some momentum. Johnny Moran hit a shot and Rank followed with a 3-pointer, wrapped around a Devon Archie dunk, to cut Iowa's lead to one point at 12-11.
Rank hit all three 3-point attempts and led all-scorers with 10 points. Koch added eight.
Iowa freshman Josh Oglesby scored five points to lead Iowa. The Hawkeyes shot 59.1 percent from the field and outrebounded UNI 15-11.
Iowa has lost four of its last five at UNI.
