Halftime -- Badger Ball
Marc Morehouse
Oct. 17, 2009 12:24 pm
The first half couldn't have been anymore Bucky.
Sure, the score was only 10-3, but the tempo, the fight, it all went to script for the Badgers.
The Badgers took a 3-0 lead on Philip Welch's 34-yard field goal on the Badgers' second drive, which was a 12-play monster chewing up 5:34. They went up 10-0 on their next drive, with running back Monte Ball following some brilliant blocks around the right sideline and into the end zone with 14:53 left in the second. QB Scott Tolzien fueled the drive, which started at Wisconsin's 8 after a 58-yard punt from Ryan Donahue, with 6 of 8 for 65 yards. This drive ate another 4:59 off the clock.
That was the first half -- Badger Ball.
The Badgers piled up 93 rush yards to just 23 for Iowa. The total offense was 172 to 79 in favor of Wisconsin. Tolzien finished 8 of 10 for 83 yards. RB John Clay, who was in and out after an awful-looking ankle injury, rushed 14 times for 69 yards.
Iowa was beat on the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.
The Hawkeyes managed just 23 rushing yards on 14 carries. Wisconsin DE O'Brien Schofield made a fool out of whomever tried to block him, tallying two tackles for loss in the half. UW's O-line pushed around Iowa's D-line.
Iowa finally got on the board with Daniel Murray's 37-yard field goal with 5:25 left in the second quarter. The Hawkeyes parlayed the one play they made in the first half -- a 34-yard Ricky Stanzi-to-Derrell Johnson-Koulianos completion -- into the three points.
Still, they're only down by a TD. Another half of football. Let's try not to fire anyone.
