Golf in Iowa in January
Mike Hlas Jan. 5, 2012 4:43 pm
I'm one of those dopes who tends to believe scientists more often than not. Science just seems fact-based and all.
When they tell me about climate-change, that stuff generally sails over my head. It's like most stuff that isn't particularly good news. I'd just as soon not hear it.
And as a pretty selfish person, I don't mind if it climate-change means being able to function outdoors in the winter. I'm delighted if it means giving more time off to my snow shovel and my back, both of which are still exhausted from last winter.
But when I'm able to play golf on Jan. 5 in Iowa in 60-degree weather, I know something's a bit askew in the world.
Not as askew as my golf swing, but that's another subject, and not one that would interest anyone on the planet including me.
I did, however, make a chip-in for a par today at St. Andrews in Cedar Rapids, and managed not to injure anyone on the course with my other shots. The latter is the bigger achievement. I wish that were an exaggeration for humorous effect.
It's going to get cold again, eventually. There will be snow. There may be a blizzard or an ice storm or some the most-vicious temperature-drops of this or any millennium. But I got to play golf in Iowa on Jan. 5. And the weather will be good enough to play again in Iowa on Jan. 6.
You live long enough, you'll see everything.
Today. In Cedar Rapids!
