Milestone for Ferentz
Ferentz earned his 100th career victory as a head coach, spanning 15 seasons at Iowa and Maine. Saturday's game marked his 88th win at Iowa in 12 years.
Ferentz earned his 1st win at Maine on Oct. 13, 2001 against Rhode Island. Here are some of his milestone wins at Iowa:
- 1st win (13th overall) - 24-0 vs. Northern Illinois, Sept. 18, 1999
- 10th win (22nd overall) - 42-24 vs. Minnesota, Nov. 17, 2001; it was Iowa's first trophy win under Ferentz and earned an Alamo Bowl berth
- 22nd win (34th overall) - 45-21 vs. Minnesota, Nov. 16, 2002; earned an unbeaten Big Ten season and a shared title
- 37th win (49th overall) - 6-4 vs. Penn State, Oct. 23, 2004; win came same week as Ferentz's father, John, died
- 41st win (53rd overall) - 30-7 vs. Wisconsin, Nov. 20, 2004; victory claimed a share of Big Ten title
- 81th win (93rd overall) - 24-14 vs. Georgia Tech, Orange Bowl, Jan. 5, 2010; first BCS bowl win for Ferentz
- 88th win (100th overall) - 18-13 vs. Indiana, Nov. 6, 2010
Key moment
On fourth-and-10 at the Iowa 18-yard line and 28 seconds left, Indiana quarterback Ben Chappell threw toward a wide-open Demarlo Belcher in the Iowa end zone. Belcher dropped the pass, and Iowa won the game 18-13.
“It's tough on all of us,” Chappell said. “It's tough on the whole team. When you lose like that it's not easy.”
Milestone for DJK
Iowa wide receiver Derrell Johnson-Koulianos set a new school record for career pass receptions with a 6-yard catch in the first quarter. Johnson-Koulianos, who finished the game with six catches for 72 yards, now has 163 catches for 2,440 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also owns the yardage record and is tied for fourth in touchdown receptions.
Fresh starts and happy returns
Senior offensive lineman Josh Koeppel earned his first career start at right guard, replacing Adam Gettis, who did not dress with an undisclosed situation. Koeppel, an Iowa City native, is best known for his collision with a truck while riding his motorcycle in early September.
True freshman Marcus Coker gained 129 yards on 22 carries in his first start. He replaced Adam Robinson, who suffered a mild concussion last week against Michigan State.
Sacked
Iowa entered the game ranked sixth in the Big Ten in sacks with 13. Mike Daniels had Iowa's only sack on Saturday, which helped keep Indiana to a field goal in the second quarter.
“We game-planned for them, got our protection together to the point where (Saturday), we knew we could be successful,” Indiana running back Trea Burgess said.
“They're a pretty good front four. A lot of them guys are probably going to go to the NFL. But me, (the coaches) told me, ‘I‘m going to put you on them, cut them just working them all game, keep ahead of the game.' Sometimes they got me, sometimes I got them.”
Daniels now has four sacks and 11 tackles for loss this season.
Lynch mob
Indiana Coach Bill Lynch rode officials as intensely as ever in the first half, berating them after multiple penalties.
Lynch didn't apologize for his actions after the game.
“I wanted to win,” Lynch said. “The kids deserve for me to be fighting for them, and that's what we did.”
Chappel said Lynch's tirades inspired the team.
“It's great to have a guy like that,” Chappel said. “He's fighting for us and with what he's doing, he's fighting for his players. It's huge.”
