Most of you good people are not from Cedar Rapids. Some of you never have reason to step foot in my hometown, and have little reason to be interested in it.
I get that. Please, indulge me. There is a new movie out, a comedy called "Cedar Rapids." It stars Ed Helms of the TV series "The Office" and the hit move "The Hangover." Roger Ebert gave "Cedar Rapids" three stars.
RottenTomatoes.com, a site that gathers critics' reviews, had 51 of its first 62 reviews of "Cedar Rapids" rated "fresh." That's a thumbs-up.
Peter Travers, Rolling Stone: "Cedar Rapids" is both hilarious and heartfelt. It's also powered by a dream cast, led by the outstanding Ed Helms.
Joe Morganstern, Wall Street Journal: The main thing about "Cedar Rapids" is that it makes you laugh-often and out loud.
Manohla Dargis, New York Times: And while Mr. Arteta likes a dirty joke as much as the next comic director, because those laughs burble up from characters whose raucousness comes from an honest grappling with life's absurdities, the jokes sing as well as zing.
Critics of the Chicago Tribune, USA Today, New York Daily News and Los Angeles Times also liked it. It isn't a great, unforgettable film, but how many are?
This, I think, is a good thing for my city. Some in Cedar Rapids are miffed the movie wasn't filmed here. Who cares? It's not about the actual Cedar Rapids or any other real place. What I like is that the name "Cedar Rapids" will be on tongues all over the nation and beyond for a reason other than a flood that clobbered us in 2008.
So I'm asking you for a favor. If you live in a place where "Cedar Rapids" is showing and you happen to think of it, click a photo of the marquee and send it to me at mike.hlas@sourcemedia.net.
If I get several of these, I'll post them with credit to the contributors and we'll have some fun with it.
The movie opened in certain cities Friday, and will debut elsewhere as the month progresses.
