This is probably too much, but enjoy Kirk Ferentz video. (Let me know if I goofed on any of the captions.)
It was an unusual year for Iowa football recruiting. It was pretty much over before Iowa's season was over. That's a rarity for the Hawkeyes. There are 19 team captains in the group, with 14 honor roll students. "We addressed the needs we needed to address," Ferentz said.
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz doesn't anticipate filling Bryan Bulaga's or Amari Spievey's spots with a player from this class, at least immediately. Makes sense. A true freshman left tackle and right corner might be a disaster. Also here, Ferentz talks about accepting James Morris' commitment so early. The Solon High School star committed to the Hawkeyes in 2007. Former Iowa running backs coach Carl Jackson thinks Morris could play RB.
Here, the Iowa coach talks about tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz, a player they identified in recruiting very early. Also, this is where Ferentz talks about A.J. Derby and his prospects at quarterback. He's a quarterback. Iowa brought him as a quarterback. He'll be quarterback unless it doesn't work out. "He's got a lot of upside at quarterback," Ferentz said. "If that doesn't work out, he can do a lot of things." But that's down the road.
Iowa now has eight scholarship running backs. "I can't remember us ever having too many runningbacks," Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said. "I think the guys we have compliment what we need." Marcus Coker is a bigger back. De'Andre Johnson is coming off a torn ACL. Johnson is a strong football player.
Here, the Iowa coach talks about the five defensive linemen the Hawkeyes are bringing in with this recruiting class -- Carl Davis, Anthony Ferguson Jr., Mike Hardy, Donavan Johnson and Louis Trinca-Pasat. The coach isn't sure who'll end up where, but he knows Iowa is top heavy with upperclassmen on the D-line. And it is, with three seniors and a junior starting next season.
Iowa is bringing four linebackers in with the 2010 class. Immediately, he sees Austin Gray as a middle linebacker. Other than that, he's not sure. Gray, James Morris, Jim Poggi and Christian Kirksey are the LBs of 2010. The linebacker depth chart also is extremely top heavy, with three seniors potentially starting next season. Also, here he talks about the two O-line and three safeties coming in. Don't expect to see the O-line; but the safeties have a real shot.
Here, the Iowa coach talks about the different areas Iowa broke into this recruiting season -- Cincinnati, Washington D.C./Baltimore and the success in Ohio.
The Iowa coach talks about what exactly the program looked for in recruits this season. "We'll know a lot more in three or four years," he said.
Iowa has smashed into the St. Louis recruiting scene. DE Adrian Clayborn and WR Marvin McNutt, both of whom starred for the Hawkeyes last season, came from the St. Louis area. The Hawkeyes picked up another St. Louis duo in linebacker Christian Kirksey and safety Don Shumpert. "Players sell players," Ferentz said. That was a piece of recruiting advice he got from Bernie Wyatt, who opened turf in New Jersey for Hayden Fry.
There are 21 names signed up to come to Iowa next fall. Check for the Scribd bios below and coach Kirk Ferentz video. (Marc Morehouse)
