Kirk Ferentz is in the second season of coaching a son. James Ferentz will be a redshirt freshman center for the Hawkeyes next fall. There has been some disciplinary drama here. James will serve a game suspension for two alcohol-related offenses. Here, Kirk Ferentz discusses the positives and negatives of coaching sons. Brian Ferentz played center for the Hawkeyes from 2003-05.
Also, Ferentz discusses his distaste for the social media vehicle Twitter in an interview I conducted with him last week in Iowa City. Here, he talks about Iowa's approach to the new media. He's more open-minded than you think. He knows it's something Iowa football can "use."
Ferentz also talks about the Rose Bowl. He was there in 1981 -- serving as O-line coach for Hayden Fry -- when the Hawkeyes broke through after 19 non-winning seasons. As Hlas wrote today, Ferentz is class president of Old School. The Rose Bowl still holds high reverance for him. He thought they were headed to Pasadena in 2002, but the Orange Bowl bought the bowl bid and swept up the Hawkeyes (smart move, BTW, Orange Bowl). It's still on Ferentz's list of "to-do's," probably pretty close to the top.
