DJK pleads: Where do you go with DJK from here? (with plea agreement)
Marc Morehouse
Jan. 24, 2011 4:30 pm
Former University of Iowa receiver Derrell Johnson-Koulianos has pleaded guilty to possession of marijuana in exchange for other drug charges being dismissed.
Johnson-Koulianos, 23, was granted a deferred judgment, which means if he completes one year of unsupervised probation without further violations the offense would be cleared from his record.
So, that's pretty much taken care of.
Working on a Twitter question: Where does DJK stand with you?
Meanwhile, on Feb. 5, Johnson-Koulianos will be on the national roster for the Texas vs. the Nation Bowl. The game will be nationally televised live on CBS College Sports with an expected 1 p.m. kickoff.
As far as I know, DJK does not have an NFL Combine invite and I think it's a stretch to think he'd get one now. The Combine is scheduled for Feb. 23 through March 1.
Some team will give him a chance in the NFL. It's the NFL. Yes, character standards have risen in recent years, but, on paper, DJK's foibles don't add up to much. Still, NFL personnel departments will put him through the interview process. You remember that? The same interview process that last draft season asked Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant if his mother was a prostitute.
That's not going to be fun for Iowa's career receiving leader.
Wes Bunting, college scouting director for the National Football Post, thought DJK was draftable before his December arrest for drug-related charges.
"People said second or third round, I never thought he was that dramatic of a wide receiver," Bunting said. "I think he makes a roster as a No. 3 or No. 4 guy. This was before [the arrest], I thought he was a mid-round pick at best.
Now, maybe a team takes a shot on him late, but I think they're going to make him take the hard road. He'll be a free agent. If you mess up, there's no financial investment, you get cut. If you learn from it and mature, then you've got a pretty good value as a free agent. That's the way I think it'll end up going, but I don't think he's any more than a late-rounder, a team that really has a good feel for him takes a flier on him."
Bunting, who believes DJK lost a Senior Bowl invite over the arrest, pointed to the importance of the interviews.
"The biggest thing he has going forward is at the NFL PA [Texas Bowl thingie], the interview process," Bunting said. "Just owning up to everything. That's going to speak more than anything he does at a pro day or during his play. Everyone knows he can play, but he's got to answer the tough questions."
That's a really good question.
________
Here's DJK's plea agreement:
________
Here's your takes from Twitter:
@Steve_Liebscher Maybe Ferentz will stop treating him like he a leper and let him wear the Tigerhawk and celebrate his contributions. AND @Steve_Liebscher So would I. I'll still maintain what he did is much less of a deal than an OWI. DJK actions from before hurt him with KF.
@iowahawkeyes DJK > Captain Hair Gel.
@rod_leviathan I think people in Iowa City WANT to see DJK do well, get his life together and all that. Don't know many Alford supporters. [I asked if DJK has now replaced Alford as MPIF, "most polarizing Iowa figure."]
@China_Wall Slates almost clean, get after those NFL dreams. Your excellence on the field will be fueled by your excellence off it.
@ctthawk He can't figure out to be quiet! Calling my shot now, djk will never play a down in the nfl period.
@GFlush69 Absolutely. [As polarizing as Alford.] There is an arrogance about him that makes me question him & putting Iowa on blast in Tweets pissed me off.
@atlbraves15 No. He made a mistake. That's it. People aren't perfect. [Another reference to the Alford thing.]
@MetsFanVI No. DJK was a single incident. Alford was a long timeline of suck.
@rwendt40 I think the fact that he was so popular and fell so quickly makes people stop and watch the trainwreck. (Excellent observation from Ryan Wendt, KWBG Sports Director in Boone.)
@mattkizer One fully embraced Iowa, one never did, so no way! #freedjk (Alford still gets strong reaction. Probably will until Iowa's basketball program is less zombie-like.)
@muench At first I was upset, but since more info has come out I support DJK. Everyone has mis-steps, now it's about moving forward.
@ericsundy Sadly, dude won't amount to anything. He's got the talent, but his head isn't in the right place. (This is what the NFL intends to find out.)
@jva614 I'm all about @DJ_Koulianos having a successful NFL career. I just hope he fixes his probs now and never go back. Good luck.
@DLinden890 DJK owned up to his mistakes, put the blame on himself, no excuses. Iowa's all-time leading receiver. Much love and respect!
@thewood31 DJK connected with fans during games. He had the cockiness that is needed for WRs and will make a fine WR in the NFL. (cont) Sure, he had some issues off the field but we all make mistakes. How we move on defines us. So far he has done well with that.
@blakenagel DJK has had his punishment handed down. The allegations alone are going to hurt his draft potential, why punish him further? (Great question for the Iowa program to answer. It never will.)
@HenHawk5 He screwed up. When Coach Ferentz was done with him, I was too. (Lots of people are cool with the KF line. I get that. I'm not in a spot in my life where I give up on people, but, as I've said before, it's not my job to keep them eligible, in line and out of the headlines for the wrong reasons. So, I have empathy for the KF side of it, too.)
@bucketochicken He's a kid. He screwed up. He gave us HOURS of unforgettable entertainment & pride in our team. Forgive him & move on.
@bjleeper Love DJK gave us some great seasons of football. Hurt himself more than the team. Hope he gets it straight and playson sunday.
@jmarkhinton If Derrell keeps his nose clean & works hard, I'm 4 it!! We all stumble & need second chances. #freedjk
@ihawkeyes911 Made a mistake, will do his time. Can't forget what he did for us on the field. Will always be one of my favorite hawkeyes!
@brandonskahill Like a lot of kids, he made a bad choice. Do not define him by it.
@Jackovin If R future was determined by the dumb things we did in college, I believe most of us wld b doomed. Much luv @DJ_Koulianos. (Um, yes, yes and yes. I had plenty of dumbness in college.)
@mcjordansc Great player and did great things as a Hawk on the field. Made mistakes. Hopefully he learns from said mistakes.
@AnthonySLong He's still the greatest Iowa receiver of all time. Off field mistake shouldn't take away from on field accomplishments.
@CPUHAWK Forever a Hawkeye! Was disappointed... but confident he can turn it around.
@rwendt40 He was a good wide receiver at Iowa that was probably under-used. Hopefully he is surrounded by good people right now.
@d_keeley DJK provided myself and all of Hawkeye Nation with plenty of thrills in the past four years. I inhaled in college. Forgiven. (Again, the college thing. Totally lived it. Be lying otherwise. My GPA would, however, reflect a certain growth in maturity.)
@zowie420 He obviously made bad decisions & things didn't end well, but that shouldn't take away from what he accomplished on the field.
@deadheadmeet Misunderstood, great Hawk!
@TaxBrackett I'll never forget that over the shoulder catch against Mich in 2009 in double coverage on 3rd and long. @TaxBrackett Followed by the ridic catch (a ranked Wisco) against a sub-par Hawkeye team to end the 1st half in 2007 at Wisco. At night. With Jake Christensen as the QB.
@itsbensteele If a judge was comfortable giving him a chance to wipe the slate clean, who am I to say differently? (There's a certain amount of logic -- a lot -- that shoots this entire post to H-E-Double hockey sticks.)
@HLGuy49 I'm for second (third? fourth? fifth?) chances, but is the NFL??? Teams are emphasizing character. DJK = undrafted free agent. (As the Wes Bunting comments reflect. NFL is business and will find out what it needs to find out.)
@ryanVevans Talented and has a chance at the next level. But if I question some of his tweets I wonder what the NFL scouts are thinking. (Fair and logical thinking here.)
@TeeOhhSee DJK will always be one of my favorite hawks on the field, but it will be tough to forget what happened I hope he can clean up.
@michaelgraham His arrest made me sad, and compounded a frustrating season. He's ok with me; you can't erase the records or the excitement (Nope, this is true. This silence from the program is, however, deafening.)
@samllr Idk. I was on the fence until @DJ_Koulianos declined my invite for WordsWithFriends. (Ferentz snort! I don't play that. It'd be a humbling experience for me.)
@HawkeyeFos Best hawk reciever ever.
@dnelson_sease I think DJK's name has, amongst some hawk fans, reached the same taboo status of Pierre Pierce's. Which I'd say is off base. (I agree. Not in the same ballpark or league. A ridiculous leap in logic.)
@jfahr @DJ_Koulianos made a mistake, just like many college kids do. He is highly talented and loves #hawkeyenation. No beef here.
@shanecozz @DJ_Koulianos made a mistake and is accepting it like a man...at least it didn't ruin his college career.
@bigbamgraphics He's still 1 of the greatest players in iowa history, people make mistake and learn and move on. GO HAWKS!
@detroithawkeye DJK: Took 3 weeks 4 him 2 finally tweet anything w/regret. Either he's in denial about what happened, or he's fronting. (This is an excellent question.)
@hawkreno He's good with me. Great job on the playing field when it counted. Most college kids try or do drugs. Love for IA is real. (I wonder about "most," but I'd probably be surprised by the answer.)
@BSero82 Once a Hawkeye, Always a Hawkeye..But probably one of the most controversial Hawks ever. Mysterious, Socialite, Big Mouth.
@tmorganjr I won't soon forget his time at Iowa, but it seems his ego has outgrown his skills. (An incendiary interview question. One where the interviewee takes the mic out of his coat and walks out.) @tmorganjr I hope he'll prove me wrong in that regard, but his Twitter account doesn't provide much hope.
@brendabuckner DJK got a bad deal. He got shunned for what boils down to a small possession charge. Other players have done far worse things. Still #1 receiver in my heart and the record books. Plus, I think I love him even more now. Twitter was made for DJK. (Truth.)
@Lucasentric He's fine in my book. I will always consider him a Hawkeye. Everyone has ups & downs. His down came at an inopportune time.
@MIHawkI5 Still one of my all time favorite hawkeye players...DJK brought it every Saturday.
@Vinnyschick DJK? For my part, disinterest. (Oddly, I buy this. A lot of what this blog is and where my thinking goes is "who's on Iowa?" What players are in play for next season? What are the Hawkeyes' hotspots and prospects? I have to think that way. I've probably already spent too much time on this and the draft. This week, more recruiting.)
@brandonjalles @DJ_Koulianos.....great hawkeye on the field.....poor example off. (No doubt. Proving to do.)
@Hawkdaddyia Did u see him blast his "ex-coaches"? so I tweeted this to him-you brought this on yourself - coaches did what they had to do. (I didn't see that. The second-guessing of coaches by an athlete? In a public forum? That's not going to help him.)
@brojoe13 One of (if not THE) greatest WR in Iowa history. Timing of arrest bad, no hawk fans woulda cared had it been after bowl/draft. Unquestionably a divisive figure but impact on program and record books can't be understated. Wish him all the luck in NFL. (IMO, the negative headlines, like the ones throughout December, age Ferentz by dog years. He cares more than you know and they hurt more than you know.)
@tombuchheim Both brought a rare cockiness to Iowa City. DJK backed his up on the field. Alford didn't on the court. Both dissapoint. (More on the Alford/polarizing.)
@c_starfish3 Mistakes happen. Hope he learns from it all. marry pretty or die. (I really thought that's what that was.)
@mwcox403 I look at DJK the same way I do Roy Marble, one of the most exciting Hawks of all time! All will be forgiven... someday. (Excellent example.)
@hannahellsworth DJK is awesome. He is an amazing football player. He made a silly decision and is learning from it. I wish he didn't leave the Hawks like that but sometimes bad things happen. He will represent us well in the NFL! #DJK4life
@TheMattSandy People make mistakes..DJK is human w/ freakish football skills..he'll go down as one of my favorite Hawkeyes of all time.
@ColoradoHawkeye I don't think so. I think people were disappointed w DJK but still like him. I don't think anyone really ever liked Alfraud.
@nate_einck Based off what the public knows, it was a harsh penalty. Innocent until proven guilty. DJK will always be a Hawkeye in my bk.
@bdj79 Good player, made a real dumb mistake. Will remember him fondly as a hawkeye.
@eldonfreal Loved watching him play. Still thought he could have done more, blame for that shared btw him and coaches. Wish him luck.
@HMBBabyface I like DJK, I really do. But as hard as it is to say: I don't want him on our team. I've never understood "three strikes"... I've made it through four years of college without being arrested. Why should those who have been made bad decisions ... be allowed to represent Iowa? The program is worth more than that. (sorry for multiple tweets...140 just isn't enough) -- (This is a series of three tweets from a bona fide college kid. Interesting. Opinion doesn't fit with demographic.)
@fearlessfoley Making progress on winning me back. Still needs at least a year of sustained staying out of trouble.
@bradybogue I see him as Iowa's all-time leading receiver and a guy who left it all on the field every Saturday. A true competitor.
@CaliHawki @DJ_Koulianos is fine by me. One of the best WRs in #Hawkeye history!!! I am happy he only got possession. #MPOD (MPOD is Make Plays Or Die, I know that now.)
@BrianSugarSweet Disappointed that it happened, People make mistakes and he seems to be back on the right track, Still one of my faves.
@jchromes DJK, one the best Hawks to ever play, but left on a bad note with no time left to make amends. Unfortunate. #nextmanin (And he has to live with that. Very inciteful post.)
@PjAdamovicz DJK made a mistake. Still a great Hawkeye and still the best receiver in Iowa history.
@ErikTheBrandt His priorities n mine r way diff, bt gave it all on the field n very engaging. Hope he does some growing up n very successful.
@MajesticScott Kid made a mistake. I agree with KF's decision, but it doesn't diminish how I view his career at Iowa looking back.
@DCintheSTL If the legal system has dropped charges, that's good enough for me! Can we give him the tigerhawk decal for his helmet again? (I don't see that happening. DJK is playing the NFLPA game in San Antonio on Feb. 5. I talked to Iowa officials. No Iowa helmet. Not sure how much flex was there, though.)
@snipes130 @DJ_Koulianos will always b my fav Hawk. Many Hawks have made worse mistakes, coaches son included. DJK deserves a 2nd chance. (James Ferentz had a PAULA and a public intox. I'm not sure how the meter of seriousness works. The cocaine charge was the one that freaked everyone. On paper, it's gone, but is it really gone?)
@croquet037 He's an all time favorite of mine. Loved him, despite any minor issues. Getting any negatives? Not seeing any on my feed! :) (There are more than a few negs, which is fine. Still, IMO, the silence from teammates and program is deafening.)
@AndyRedlinger DJK who? A distant memory. I just hope he gets priorities straight.
@JeremyWheelock I like him, but only know him on the field. He's a role model for younger players, so I hope he takes that notion to heart.
@JMHillebrand DJK went from an internet legend to Iowa's all time leading WR. Iowa's most consistent receiver the last 4 years. We cool.
@Westy_3 No problems with him. Kid made some bad choices, which a lot of college kids do. Learn from your mistakes and grow from it.
@ericgrimoskas He will live forever in the records and in my mind- but his character is opposite of what I hope Iowa football is all about.
@egarver He's a very smooth poser and a good FB player. Wish him the best at the next level. (Word "poser" is tough. Up to DJK to wash it off.)
@RDKluss RE: DJK I love the guy. Sure, I was disappointed at first but the guy never quit on this team, unlike others. Record books. (Who quit?)
@JoshPElliott DJK may have made some mistakes, but his play at Iowa speaks for itself. Greatest Hawkeye receiver ever, clutch player.
@stephen_moore A promising athlete who made some mistakes. I wish him the best in the future and wouldn't mind him on my NFL team. I think DJK has more fans around here. But he does has some very unforgiving detractors.
@cestdog @DJ_Koulianos is in good standing with me. The kid made some regrettable choices that became very public. It happens.
@ManonMB He was fun to watch on the field-arrogance off is a little much-wish people would stop talking about him&feeding his ego. (Uh oh. I'm in trouble here.)
@MichaelPatrick2 Once a Hawkeye, always a Hawkeye. Just needs an Oprah sit-down with Kirk. (Ferentz snort.)
@darrinp10 First off DJK is innocent until proven guilty. He will always be a hawk in my book, I wish him luck next at the next level.
@CarverCrazy I hated his antics and his arrest showed his immaturity but the thing I'll remember most about was KO return for TD at OSU.
@BowserVoice Hope the kid kicks the habit, straightens out and becomes a productive, law-abiding member of society. Wish him luck!
@milleryep77 If you only care about a player when he helps you win, you really don't care about the player-DJK HAWK 4EVER.
@BiggJJohnson The guy did some great things at Iowa. He played his heart out. I don't think that off-field stuff should kill his memory.
@Jackie_Ballgame I'm sure he's a good guy, but can't let him hurt future recruiting (can't let moms think we're not running clean program).
@Sethbryan Will alwys luv wut DJK did in a Hawk jersey & enjoyed his personality most the time. Sumtimes u need to keep quiet tho.
@darbx1605 DJK stands as he always did, a legend - internet, on the field, and in his own mind and ours. #mpod (That covers all the bases.)
@michaelsglenn DJK - a young man who made an error in judgement and hopefully learns from it. I'll still root for him in the NFL.
@jennifpettersen Was REALLY upset about it for a bit; over it now. Wish him the best; hope its just a footnote in a long, productive NFL career.
@JasonAGibson DJK made mistakes like everyone else does, still all-time leading receiver. The latter point is what I'll remember. #DJK#1.
@backseatfan Bengals will grab DJK in a late late round, or FA. Prob FA, he doesn't have elite skills, plus character is questionable.
@backseatfan He will have to work pretty hard to even make a team, his poor judgment will cost him a lot of money, even if it is deferred. (I had him losing $552,000 in this
post. But I could be wrong. Certainly some guesswork here.)
