If you're a Michigan high school "Mr. Basketball," you can play.
So Iowa State has a player on his way. His name is Monte Morris. On Monday, Morris was named "Mr. Basketball."
Morris is a 6-foot-1 guard at Flint Beecher. He is the first winner of that award since 2008 who hasn't signed with Michigan State. Current Spartans who got that honor include standouts Keith Appling and Derrick Nix.
Other previous winners include current NBA players Wilson Chandler, Jason Richardson and Shane Battier.
Morris averaged over 23 points this season. He led Beecher in scoring, assists and steals for four seasons.
Flint was a gold mine for Iowa State when Johnny Orr was its coach. Cyclone greats Barry Stevens and Jeff Grayer came from that city.
Here is a story from mlive.com about Morris. His team is in the Michigan state tournament this week.
Beecher, by the way, is the alma mater of Iowa all-time scoring leader Roy Marble.
