The Cedar Rapids Reds defended their Global World Series title, capturing the 9U crown last weekend in Des Moines.
Winner of the 8U crown a year ago, the Reds completed the season 50-12 (38-5 vs. 9U competition) and won the 9U major state title, as well.
The Red were 8-0 at the World Series, beating the Central Iowa Cubs, 7-6, in semifinals by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the last inning, and topping the Nebraska Bison, 8-4, in final.
Austin Hilmer and Parker Smith both hit .523 for the Reds and Alex Sturbaum led the team with 11 RBIs. Preston Schulte went 2-0 and didn't allow an earned runs in eight innings of work.
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Maggie Snider of Solon placed third in the Youth-12 Epee event at the USA Fencing National Championships.
The top 76 Y12 fencers from around the U.S. qualified for the event. Snider entered the tournament ranked ninth nationally and finished with a record of 10-1, defeating the top seeded fencer for the bronze medal.
The Junior Warriors 9U baseball team went 4-1 at the 2013 USSSA A State tournament, finishing second.
The Warriors defeated the Iowa River Rippers and Linn-Mar Pride 9U and entered bracket play as the No. 2 seed. The Warriors beat Iowa City Little Hawks 9U White, 12-4, and the Mahaska Rebels, 9-1, before losing to the top-seeded Burlington Mudd Dawgs Purple in the championship.
IOWA CITY - JD Goodfellow of Iowa City will compete in the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships at the PGA Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., later this week.
Goodfellow won the Optimist District tournament in Marshalltown last month to qualify, shooting a 1-under-par 71.
