COMMUNITY: C.R. 'grannies' are champs

WEST DES MOINES - The Cedar Rapids Sizzlers won the Iowa Senior Olympics Granny Basketball tournament last weekend, beating the Hot Pink Grannies of Des Moines in the championship game, 62-39.
The Sizzlers, who finished the year undefeated, consist of Lola Reisner, Susan Cahalan, Diana Marker, Linda Jennings, Charlotte Emerson, Linda Toerper, Lois Henderson, Roberta Lowery, Linda McEowen, Lori Neblung, Dana Daves, Susan Hartley and Kathleen Sanders.
The Iowa Senior Olympics are a multi-sport event that attracts athletes age 50-and-up from around the state. Other sports are bicycling, swimming, table tennis, Pickleball, Scrabble, golf, track and field, tennis and horseshoe pitching.
Granny Basketball teams play the traditional six-player version of the game and wear 1920s-era uniforms. A team can have two guards, two starters and two centers. No running is allowed, although “hurrying” is permitted. More information can be found at www.grannybasketball.com
