Butler basketball compared to the Big Ten
Mike Hlas Mar. 28, 2011 4:44 am
Did you realize ...
Butler University has roughly 4,500 students. The average high school GPA of its incoming students is 3.74. Its football team plays in the Pioneer Football League, the nation's only non-scholarship, football-only NCAA Football Championship Subdivision conference. Drake is also in the league.
That's great, but let's talk men's basketball.
Butler has been represented in the men's Final Four as often as all the schools in the Big Ten combined (Michigan State in 2009 and 2010) in the last four years.
With two Final Four appearances, Butler has as many in its history as does fellow Indiana school Purdue, and one more than Notre Dame.
Butler has now been to as many or more Final Fours as Wisconsin (2), Penn State (1), Minnesota (1, which was vacated), Nebraska (0 NCAA wins) and Northwestern (0 NCAA appearances).
Iowa has been to three Final Fours, but Butler has reached two more than the Hawkeyes in the last 30 years.
Now let's talk coaches.
Butler's Brad Stevens has an NCAA tournament record of 10-3, compiled in four years. Here are the NCAA records of the current Big Ten coaches:
Tom Izzo, Michigan State 35-13
Tubby Smith, Minnesota 29-15
Thad Matta, Ohio State 16-9
Bo Ryan, Wisconsin 14-10
Bruce Weber, Illinois 11-8
John Beilein, Michigan 8-6
Matt Painter, Purdue 7-6
Tom Crean, Indiana 5-5
Fran McCaffery, Iowa 2-5
Bill Carmody, Northwestern 1-2
Doc Sadler, Nebraska 0-1
Ed DeChellis, Penn State 0-2
Crean, McCaffery, Sadler and Carmody have not coached an NCAA game at their current schools.
Tom Davis had an NCAA tourney record of 18-11. Johnny Orr's was 10-10. Steve Alford's is 4-5 through 16 years of coaching Division I teams.
More on Butler: The Bulldogs' all-time NCAA tourney mark is 17-10 for a winning percentage of .630. That tops eight of the Big Ten's 12 teams.
Michigan State 52-24 .684
Michigan 43-21 .672
Indiana 60-30 .667
Ohio State 47-26 .644
