Bryce Cartwright looks for fit in Iowa City

IOWA CITY - Bryce Cartwright is a long way from home, but he's starting to find a fit in Iowa City.

Cartwright, a junior guard, will compete for his third different team in three years. He originally signed with Fresno State out of high school and played last season at Paris (Texas) Junior College. Now, he's hoping this is his final move.

"I'm looking forward to bringing something to this team," said Cartwright, who is listed at 6-foot-1. "I'm looking forward to taking us the next level, whether that's supporting my teammates or playing or whatever the case may be."

Cartwright's journey to Iowa City began in Compton, Calif., where he shot hoops every day at Lueders Park. Although Compton, which is located in south central Los Angeles, is notorious for crime, Cartwright said the city's image is mischaracterized.

"It was rough at times. I think every city has some rough parts, though," he said. "It wasn't like it was made out to be. I made it. A lot of people can make it and will make it."

Cartwright was highly sought after his senior year at Dominguez High School and was a McDonald's All-American nominee. He attended Fresno State for one season and started 20 games at point guard. He averaged 4.9 points, 3.2 assists and 1.8 rebounds a game for the Bulldogs. But instead of cultivating those skills in Fresno, Cartwright chose to leave after his freshman season.

"It didn't work out, I'd say," Cartwright said. "We're cool now, maybe just wasn't a good fit at the time or we just butted heads."

Cartwright then transferred to Paris Junior College so he could take another step back to Division I. He averaged 9 points and 3.9 assists and was named to the Region XIV postseason all-tournament team. He spent the summer finishing up classes to achieve his associate's degree and looking for his next basketball program.

In the end, Cartwright picked Iowa over Miami (Ohio) and Oregon. He developed a connection with new coach Fran McCaffery and wanted to continue that in the Big Ten.

"I liked the coaches," Cartwright said. "I had a good visit. I like what they've done so far and I wanted to be a part of that."

Cartwright touts his strengths as "just trying to make the right play at all times." He'll compete for playing time with returning point guard Cully Payne and off-guard Matt Gatens, although there are sets where he might enter the game alongside both players.

"I think the competition is open. I don't think any spots are set," Cartwright said. "I don't think it allows a team to get better if things are set. You've got to keep somebody always on edge. I think that's how it is.

"Pretty much it's all our first year with each other so it's going to be a new experience for all of us."
