Big Ten awards flowing with support from Iowa
Jan. 31, 2011 11:27 am
At the midpoint of the Big Ten men's basketball season, Iowa has contributed more to the league's weekly Player of the Week honors than any other school.
Unfortunately for the Hawkeyes, the award-winning performance come in a supporting role.
Of the eight players who have earned the weekly award, six claimed it in part by playing the Hawkeyes. This week's co-winners - Penn State's Talor Battle and Michigan's Darius Morris - put up big numbers against Iowa. Battle scored 23 points against the Hawkeyes in a 14-point victory and later lifted the Nittany Lions past Wisconsin. Morris earned Michigan's third career triple-double in a 14-point win against Iowa.
Illinois' Demetri McCamey shared the top spot (with Purdue's E'Twaun Moore) following the first slate of league games after scoring 20 points and dishing 10 assists in a 10-point win against Iowa. Ohio State's Jared Sullinger (24 points, 12 rebounds) and Purdue's Ryne Smith (18 points on six 3-pointers) shared it in week 2 after both played Iowa.
In the fourth week, Sullinger again won top honors after posting a 13-point, nine-rebound performance against Iowa (Sullinger also scored 27 points and grabbed 16 rebounds against Illinois later that week).
The only week a player claimed the honor without playing the Hawkeyes was Michigan State's Draymond Green in the third week of Big Ten play. Green and the Spartans come to Iowa City on Wednesday.
