Anthony Hubbard: From 47 months in prison to getting a scholarship offer from Iowa's men's basketball program

Mar. 6, 2011 9:34 pm
Thanks to HawkeyeInsider.com's Rob Howe, here's a story I think you'll find interesting.
One of the guests Iowa's men's basketball program had in Iowa City this weekend was 6-foot-5, 215-pound guard Anthony Hubbard of Frederick (Md.) Community College. He is a sophomore. He is 25 years old.
He averaged 20.7 points and 10.1 rebounds this year for Frederick (24-7). He made 64.1 percent of his field goal tries, and had 3.3 turnovers per game.
He spent three years and 11 months incarcerated after a robbery arrest when he was 17.
Hubbard sat next to Cedar Rapids Washington prep/Iowa signee Josh Oglesby at Saturday's Purdue-Iowa game. He spoke to Howe this weekend. Click here to read his story. Here is an excerpt:
He's tightened up his circle of friends after getting caught up with the wrong people doing the wrong things.
"It's an older group," he said. "It's people that have direction like me. They all understand what I'm working towards now."
Hubbard said that the Iowa coaches believe in his personal turnaround.
"They really have embraced what I've done with my life," Hubbard said. "They're not going to judge me on what happened eight years ago. They embrace what I'm doing with my life and the turnaround I've made."
Penn State, Rutgers and Iona have also offered scholarships to Hubbard, and other schools are in the mix. Click the link above to learn more.
