25 Years Ago - Heisman battle between Bo Jackson, Chuck Long and ... Joe Dudek?
Mike Hlas Nov. 5, 2010 6:50 am
It was quite the Sports Illustrated cover. From Dec. 2, 1985, it had a mock Heisman Trophy ballot.
Do you take Auburn running back Bo Jackson, Iowa quarterback Chuck Long, or Plymouth (N.H.) State running back Joe Dudek?
Jackson won and Long finished second in what, for almost all of the last 25 years, was the closest Heisman vote ever. Dudek? He placed ninth, the highest finish ever for an NCAA Division III player.
Dudek set the NCAA record for career touchdowns (79) and the Division III record for career rushing yards. He played two seasons for the NFL's Denver Broncos.
Today, as
this story from The Citizen of Laconia tells us, Dudek went on to get enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame, and deservedly so.
