It sure wasn’t easy, but Cedar Rapids Xavier sprung itself free in the final two minutes and topped Western Dubuque in a Class 4A girls’ basketball regional final. The Saints’ bid for a title repeat lives on.

Cedar Rapids Xavier earned a trip to the Class 4A Iowa high school girls’ state basketball touranment with a 54-46 regional final win over Western Dubuque.

Girls’ basketball: Despite a 5-18 record, surging Western Dubuque has another upset (and a state-tournament berth) on its mind. Bobcats take on reigning 4A champion Cedar Rapids Xavier.

The Cedar Rapids Xavier girls’ basketball team was scheduled to host Marion in a Class 4A regional semifinal, but a scoreboard issue moved the game to Marion. The change appeared to throw the Saints off early, but an early second-half surge led by senior Kyla Mason and sophomore Libby Fandel allowed the defending state champions to hold off the Wolves, 54-47.
