But Trey McKowen scored 31 points, including the first five of overtime, as the Cougars picked up a good 64-61 win over Johnston.

The Battle of Waterloo didn’t disappoint and Alburnett left with a runner-up finish to Class 3A power southeast Polk. Iowa State competed at the Collegiate Duals. Cornell, Luther impressed at the Gator Boots Duals in Tennessee and more in the Wrestling Weekend That Was.
Pairings were set Thursday for the 14-team, 7-game crossover event, which will be held January 4th at the Alliant Energy PowerHouse. Matchups include Cedar Falls and West Des Moines Valley, Dubuque Senior and Waukee Northwest, and Cedar Rapids Kennedy versus Johnston.
The Cedar Falls boys’ basketball team already has posted three significant wins in the very early portion of the season. Probably its best came Tuesday night when the Tigers knocked off Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 79-73, ending Kennedy’s regular-season win streak at 46.
The Iowa High School Athletic Association announced Tuesday that Sioux City and Carroll will host state baseball tournaments in 2025. Sioux City welcomes Class 4A and 3A, while Carroll will be the site for Class 2A and 1A through 2028.

Cedar Rapids Kennedy senior boys’ basketball guard Trey McKowen is a returning first-team all-stater. He plays for his father, Jon, who is Kennedy’s head coach. He’ll play college ball for his uncle, Brooks, at Upper Iowa. His grandpa, Marty, is a hall of fame coach who is about to begin his 42nd season at Wapsie Valley
Freshman Addie McLaughlin scored 26 in her varsity girls’ basketball debut, and 2A No. 9 Iowa City Regina played its “most complete game” in Mary Rogers’ six years, a 79-59 whipping of Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
