"It's our fourth one-score loss of the year," lamented Kennedy Coach Brian White following the 14-7 loss. "If you win those games, all the sudden you are 7-2 and getting ready for the playoffs.
Five Gazette-area 5A, 4A and 3A volleyball regional semifinals to watch Thursday. All four remaining teams in 3A Region 8 are ranked, and a 3A Region 7 showdown pits River Valley South Division co-champions Mid-Prairie and West Liberty.

High school cross country: Liberty’s Keegan Decker heads back to state as a title hopeful, but won’t be going solo. Both of Iowa City High’s teams qualify (the girls were champions), along with the Liberty boys.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association’s RPI (Ratings Percentage Index) is a huge deal the last three weeks of the prep football regular season. Waterloo West was ranked one spot ahead of Cedar Rapids Kennedy (just on the outside looking in at the top 16) and picked up a huge 28-21 win Thursday night at Kingston Stadium.

Christian Cloyd has placed eighth and 12th in the last two state tournaments. The Linn-Mar senior will begin his final high school golf postseason at the Class 4A district at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls.

West Des Moines Dowling’s football team showed why it is ranked third in Class 5A Friday night with an impressive 34-0 win over Cedar Rapids Kennedy at Kingston Stadium. The Maroons outgained the Cougars, 470-113, and Kennedy head coach Brian White took a tumble on the sideline after he was run into by a player who were going out of bounds.
It didn’t look great for Iowa City Liberty’s football team when star quarterback Reece Rettig had to come out of the game with a leg injury in the second quarter of its Class 5A playoff football first-rounder Friday night against Waukee. But Rettig returned, and the Lightning rambled to a 34-20 win. Next up is Southeast Polk, which Liberty beat in the regular season but is the four-time defending 5A champion.
“It didn’t matter if it was home or away games,” Regina senior quarterback Kyle Tracy said. “He meant a lot to this team. This game was for him.”
