Western Iowa voters defy candidate's request not to vote for him

Not enough voters heeded Brian Ashley's request that they vote for others on the ballot.
Nearly 53 percent of them voted for Ashley in the Tuesday's Republican primary for Woodbury County's District 5 supervisor. He defeated Judy Darwin.
The 72-year-old Ashley, from Correctionville, had dropped out of the race in May, citing his ailments.
The surprised Ashley told the Sioux City Journal on Tuesday that "this caught me out in left field."
If Ashley stays in the race for the general election, he'll face the incumbent Democrat, Larry Clausen, of Sioux City.
