IOWA CITY - Polls open today for a special election to fill a vacancy on the Johnson County Board of Supervisors.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Democrat Lisa Green-Douglass, who has been active in local politics since 1988, and third-term North Liberty Council member and no-party candidate Chris Hoffman are seeking the empty seat on the five-member board.
That seat was left vacant late last year when former Supervisor Terrence Neuzil said he'd quit to take a job in Kalamazoo, Mich.
The winner of the special election will fill out Neuzil's term and be up for public vote again in November.
Tuesday marks the first Johnson County Board of Supervisors special election since March 2013, when Republican John Etheredge beat Democrat Terry Dahms in an election to fill a seat left vacant by former supervisor and now state Rep. Sally Stutsman. About 6,100 voters, or fewer than 7 percent of registered voters, turned out in that election.
