DES MOINES — Paul Dahl, a Webster City man who previously ran unsuccessfully for governor and Congress, announced his candidacy for Iowa governor on Wednesday.
Iowa’s next gubernatorial election is in 2026.
The 60-year-old Dahl, a Democrat who describes himself as a progressive populist, ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 1994 and 2018, and for governor in 2014 and 2022.
Dahl did not complete the requirements to be on the primary election ballots in 2014, 2018 or 2022. In 1994, he made the Democratic primary ballot in Iowa’s 5th Congressional District but earned just over 1,000 votes in losing that primary.
In a memo to Iowa media, Dahl listed his top governing priorities as agricultural reform, creating a circular economy — one based on recycling and regeneration, infrastructure repair and renewal, and an “education renaissance.”
Republican Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds has not yet announced whether she plans to run for re-election.
