Krause praises veterans legislation

Mar. 16, 2010 3:40 pm
Bob Krause, Democratic U. S. Senate hopeful, said Wednesday he was pleased that Gov. Chet Culver signed several bills benefiting soldiers, veterans and their families.
“I am pleased that the General Assembly has passed the so-called 'trailing spouse' legislation that allows a military spouse to collect unemployment compensation if he or she quits a job to re-join the service member in the event of a transfer,” said Krause, the former chairman of the Democratic Veterans Caucus. “This is recognition that military families are an important part of the economic stability of the soldier. In the modern volunteer military, a high percentage of soldiers are married. As with their civilian counterparts, two incomes are often necessary to support a family. Unemployment compensation laws have traditionally been the purview of the state under broad federal guidelines as part the federal-state cooperation in matters of national defense.”
