Election results stand after University Heights vote recount

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS - An administrative recount of the University Heights Nov. 3 election ballots changed the final vote numbers slightly, but not enough to impact the overall results.
Johnson County Auditor Travis Weipert requested the recount after the results - which included a slate of write-in candidates - showed a margin of one vote between the winner and loser of the fifth seat on the University Heights City Council. The Johnson County Board of Supervisors approved the request Thursday morning and the absentee ballot board's recount took almost five hours to conduct.
In the end, write-in candidate Weldon Heitman beat incumbent Mayor Louise From by 10 votes and incumbent council members Mike Haverkamp, Jim Lane and Silvia Quezada, along with newcomer Dorothy Maher, remained clear winners.
For the fifth seat, votes for write-in candidates Jerry Zimmerman and Shahzad Ali were originally announced as split by a single vote Tuesday night, with Zimmerman ahead, but the recount found that Zimmerman actually won that seat by nine votes, according to the Auditor's Office.
Final votes for all elections will be canvassed Tuesday.
