Voters this November should see a Marco Rubio and Hillary Clinton matchup, the Des Moines Register Editorial Board said Saturday.
The newspaper's six-member board said it had decided to endorse the two after conducting interviews and performing weeks worth of research and fact checking. On the Republican side, Donald Trump and Ted Cruz declined to meet with the board but 'that did not disqualify them from consideration for our endorsement,” wrote Executive Editor and President Amalie Nash.
Rubio 'has the potential to chart a new direction for the party, and perhaps the nation, with his message of restoring the American dream,” the paper wrote.
As for Clinton, the paper wrote, 'no other candidate can match the depth or breadth of her knowledge and experience.”
According to Real Clear Politics' most recent average of polls for Iowa, Rubio is in third place among likely Republican caucusgoers with 11 percent. Clinton is in first place with 47.9 percent support among likely Democratic caucusgoers.
