Dems Rettig, Carberry top Johnson County supervisors race
Jun. 3, 2014 11:00 pm
Incumbent Janelle Rettig and challenger Mike Carberry emerged from a field of four candidates vying for two spots in the Democratic primary election for the Johnson County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday.
Rettig, 49, of Iowa City, cruised to victory with 4,522 votes or 60 percent of the vote. The votes are unofficial until they are canvassed by the Johnson County Auditor's Office.
'I work hard year in and year out,' Rettig said after her win on Tuesday evening. 'I attend a lot of events. I study the issues. I communicate with a lot of people. It's a real honor to have the trust of the Democratic Party and get the nomination.'
Carberry, 53, an environmental activist from Iowa City, squeaked past Lisa Green-Douglass, 55, a Spanish language trainer from North Liberty. Carberry received 3,458 votes, or 46 percent. Green-Douglass earned 3,332 votes, or 44 percent,
'We sweated it out, but that's appropriate because we put a lot of sweat into this race,' Carberry said.
Diane Dunlap, 57, a clerk in the Johnson County Recorder's Office, received 1,319 votes, or 17 percent.
The only Republican candidate was incumbent John Etheredge, 29, of Lone Tree, who had no primary opponent in this heavily Democratic county. Etheredge received 2,477 votes to 94 write-in votes.
Etheredge, Rettig and Carberry will compete for two seats in the general election on November 4.
