Dave O’Brien calls out corporations in new Iowa 1st District TV ad

May. 22, 2014 3:00 pm, Updated: May. 22, 2014 3:35 pm
In a new television commercial, 1st District Democratic hopeful Dave O'Brien takes on corporations, like Walmart, for their failure to support American workers by paying fair wages and benefits. O'Brien, a Cedar Rapids attorney, has made raising the minimum wage and expanding workers' rights a top priority.
'No Iowan should be part of the working poor,” he says in a 30-second spot that will begin airing across the district that includes Cedar Rapids, Cedar Falls-Waterloo and Dubuque, later Thursday. 'If you work hard, you should make a decent wage. But, many big corporations, like Walmart, make billions in profits each year, while some of their workers need government assistance.”
After chairing the Clinton-Gore campaign for Iowa in 1992, O'Brien served undersecretary of Labor Robert Reich, working to enforce and implement progressive labor policies. O'Brien supports raising the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour and empowering workers to negotiate for a living wage by expanding collective bargaining rights. O'Brien has taken the call to expand workers' rights and raise the minimum wage directly to large employers, holding events at Walmart stores across the 1st District.
