The first-term senator was born in Canada, the son of a Cuban immigrant father and an American mother. A dual citizen of the United States and Canada, he renounced his Canadian citizenship in 2014.
As an undergraduate, he won national debating honors. Cruz grew up in Houston and went to Princeton University, where he won national debating honors, then Harvard Law School. He served as a law clerk and clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist. He worked on the George W. Bush campaign and worked for the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission.
A stint as Texas solicitor general, which included arguing cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, followed before Cruz ran successfully for the Senate in 2012.
He met his wife, Heidi, when both were working on the Bush campaign. Married in 2001, they have two daughters, Caroline and Catherine.
