Rand Paul, the libertarian U.S. senator and son of erstwhile presidential candidate Ron Paul, practiced as an ophthalmologist for 18 years before turning to politics. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010.
A self-described devout Christian, in 1995, Paul founded the Southern Kentucky Eye Clinic in Bowling Green, which provides eye exams and surgery to the needy. He also performs free eye surgery for children around the world through the Children of the Americas program.
Paul was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010. He attended Baylor University in Texas and graduated from Duke Medical School in 1988.
Paul, 52, grew up in Lake Jackson, Texas. He and his wife, Kelley Ashby Paul, moved to Bowling Green in 1993 after he completed his residency in ophthalmology. They have three sons, William, Duncan and Robert.
