Sanders, an independent U.S. senator from Vermont, is a self-described democratic socialist.
The son of Jewish immigrants, he lived on a kibbutz in Israel after graduating from college. He returned to the United States and moved to Vermont. He ran unsuccessfully for governor three times and for the U.S. Senate twice, as a third-party candidate in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1981, he was elected mayor of Burlington, Vermont's largest city, as an independent, by a margin of 12 votes.
He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1990 and served there for 16 years before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006 and re-elected in 2012.
Sanders and his wife, Jane O'Meara Driscoll, were married in 1988. Sanders has three stepchildren, in addition to a son and seven grandchildren.
