Biden draft movement in Iowa seeks candidate

Mar. 23, 2015 3:39 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS - With 40 years of political experience and a reputation as a statesman and coalition builder, Vice President Joe Biden is an ideal presidential candidate, according to Will Pierce.
'Biden is uniquely suited to tackle the issues America will face over the next decade,” said Pierce, organizing director of Run Biden Run, which hopes to raise a grass-roots army of 'regular Joes for Joe.”
Biden said he will decide by the end of summer whether to seek the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination. Pierce said Monday the draft effort also is about building the campaign infrastructure the vice president will need if he runs.
It's also about making sure there is an alternative for those Democrats who 'want an election instead of a coronation,” Pierce said.
'Voters are tired of dynasties in American politics,” he said about the 'House of Bush and the House of Clinton.”
That suggests to University of Iowa political scientist Tim Hagle that the Biden draft movement also is about registering dissatisfaction with the establishment candidate - Clinton.
While draft movements sometimes are intended to persuade a candidate to run, Hagle said other times, as is the case with Run Warren Run, they 'demonstrate a certain amount of dissatisfaction or longing for someone other than Clinton.”
Run Biden Run will spend the next few months using social media and other new technologies to spread enthusiasm and put together a more traditional field ground team. Plans call for hiring an Iowa political director and holding a state launch rally in May, Pierce said.
A recent CNN poll found that 62 percent of likely Democratic voters polled identified Hillary Clinton as the candidate they are most likely to vote for. Biden was second at 15 percent, followed by Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts at 10 percent.
