IOWA CITY — Two current Iowa City Council members won a primary Tuesday for the District A seat and will advance to the Nov. 7 general election.
Laura Bergus and Pauline Taylor were the top two vote-getters in the election, with 58 percent and 25 percent of the vote, respectively. Tim Borchardt finished third with 16 percent.
Bergus currently is serving her first term on the council in one of four at-large seats. This year, she’s running for election to represent District A, which covers the southwest portion of the city.
Taylor is the incumbent council representative from District A. She is in her second term after being elected for the first time in 2015.
In total, 649 people cast ballots in the primary, which is about 6.5 percent of the 9,860 registered voters in the district.
Bergus received 372 votes, Taylor 159 and Borchardt 105. There was one write-in vote.
While only District A voters were able to vote in Tuesday’s primary, Iowa City permits all Iowa City voters — regardless of their district — to vote in the district races in the general election.
Iowa City’s District C council seat also will be on the Nov. 7 ballot, but only one person is running: Andrew Dunn, who currently serves in one of the council’s at-large positions.
The November ballot also will include a race for two at-large seats. Three candidates filed nomination papers for those two seats: Josh Moe, Mandi Remington and Mazahir Salih.
