ISU Notebook for 24-21 win over Kansas State

Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht has been texting linebacker Caleb Bacon well-wishes as the latter recovers from surgery to mend a lower leg injury that will keep him off the football field for the foreseeable future — and the message is clear: Bacon’s value as a leader is as important as ever. More important, maybe.

Caleb Bacon is on on pace to earn his first career start in Iowa State’s season-opener. He also proved to be highly productive as a reserve last season, finishing second on the team in tackles with 60.

Preferred walk-on Caleb Bacon worked his way onto special teams units as a redshirt freshman last season and isn’t yet a starter at linebacker. Bacon is, however, a key rotational player — and leads Iowa State with 5.5 tackles for loss.
