Nearly 500 grocery industry leaders attended the 18th Annual Iowa Grocery Industry Association Hall of Fame Dinner Thursday, November 3, at the Sheraton West Des Moines Hotel, where the IGIA honored its Retailer of the Year, Supplier of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Award winners.
Earning this year's Retailer of the Year Award was Richard P. Beckwith, Fareway Stores CEO and Chairman of the Board. The native of Vinton, Iowa first started working for Fareway in Boone at the age of 16.
He spent many years traveling around the state to assist with store openings and worked his way through the ranks beginning in Storm Lake, and then on to Winterset and Cherokee. In 1985, Beckwith was promoted to regional supervisor in the Boone corporate office.
Beckwith took on the role of regional vice president in 2002, first vice president in 2005 and was named CEO in 2007. Rick came into his current position as chairman of the board and CEO in 2010.
Beckwith is the fourth Fareway employee to earn the Retailer of the Year Award from the IGIA. He believes in the traditions of Fareway's past, established early on by his grandfather Paul S. Beckwith and grandmother Mary Ellen, and strives to strength Fareway for a successful future.
