U.S. Cellular is planning to reduce its Iowa-based workforce by nearly 500 workers, according to a notice filed with Iowa Workforce Development this week.
However, the company has told federal officials many of the impacted workers are expected to have employment options with T-Mobile soon.
The company plans to layoff about 214 positions in Cedar Rapids, 10 in Coralville and 8 in Iowa City. The reductions are expected to occur by mid-June, the Iowa Worker And Readjustment Notice (WARN) states. The reductions are among the roughly 4,100 positions cut nationally as U.S. Cellular sells off its wireless business to T-Mobile.
The reductions include remote workers as well as those in retail stores, the Iowa notice shows.
A letter from U.S. Cellular to federal officials indicates the company “has made arrangements with T-Mobile to offer employment to a majority of these employees,” according to the letter obtained by ABC17 News in Columbia, Mo.
