This year’s Tippie Women Summit at the Tippie College of Business at the University of Iowa, which kicks off next week, will offer a series of in-person and virtual events, in the hopes of engaging even more participants, especially those students and young professionals who are just starting to form their professional identities.
“We take this concept of lifelong learning very seriously,” Tippie College of Business Dean Amy Kristof-Brown said earlier this week in discussing the importance of the conference for both undergraduate and graduate students.
“We've always felt that the summit was a really critical way of bringing together graduate students, undergraduate students, alumni and young professionals in the community who may not even be students of ours and give them opportunities for skill building and confidence building throughout their professional lives because four years is not enough to get it done.”
- On March 3, Erin Rollenhagen, a Tippie alumna and CEO of Clive-based Entrepreneurial Technologies, will discuss her book, “Soul Uprising: It’s Never Just Business,” and talk about running a tech start-up.
“Her book is about how to be true to yourself and your values while also making tough decisions in business,” Kristof-Brown said. “It's a very genuine portrayal of her lessons that she's learned … and equipping people with the confidence to be who they are and to see themselves fully stepping into a leadership Journey if that's right for them.”
- On March 9, Kristof-Brown and Tippie Associate Dean of Graduate Programs Jennifer Blackhurst will discuss women’s leadership development in the first of several virtual programs.
“The Women Summit is just one example of ongoing efforts to promote women in the arena of business, which in my role I do on a day-to-day basis,” Blackhurst said.
“The biggest thing about the Summit is that it’s an exciting way to get to connect students with members of the community, as well as our alumni.”
- On March 25, Dr. Rong Su, associate professor of Management and Entrepreneurship and Pioneer Research Fellow, will talk about breaking the impostor syndrome with which many women struggle.
“These ‘impostor’ thoughts and feelings can negatively affect one's well-being, work motivation, performance and career advancement,” Su said. “ … My research suggests that there are many misconceptions surrounding the impostor phenomenon and some of the popular advice offered can do more harm than good.”
- On April 1, the Tippie Women Summit will wrap up with a final virtual session on curating and building a network in your professional life, which will bring together several leaders from the university.
“We know we don't have as many women in senior level leadership positions in corporate America. We don't have as many on boards. We don't have as many in faculty positions,” Dean Kristof-Brown said. “Although we're moving toward more parity in positions of leadership within organizations, it's still going to take a while to get there.
“So anything that we at the university can do to provide some connectivity and support and confidence-building for women to step into those kinds of leadership roles we are excited to offer.”
These events are open to the public. Register at tippie.uiowa.edu/tippie-women-summit-2022.
