What was the last book you read?

“Life” by Keith Richards - beneath the public veneer of the blitzed-out junkie, there is really an incredibly focused and hardworking craftsman who revels in new discoveries.

Where is your favorite place to get away?

Recently it has been any beach - Costa Rica, Sonoma Coast - that we can get to with our adult kids. As they have grown up and moved away, it is really fun to be with them as adults.

Did you have a professional mentor?

I had a couple of informal ones, but I learned as much what not to do from them as what to do.

What do you always have close at hand at your workstation?

Stacks and stacks of paper. When does the electronic society really kick in?

Did you start out in this line of work? What did you think you'd be doing when you “grew up”?

No, my goal was to never truly grow up, and I am well on the way to achieving that goal.

How did you happen to come to live and work in Eastern Iowa?

I grew up in C.R., lived in California for several years and came back to raise kids here - thank you, Cedar Rapids public school teachers. You are the best.

Did you have a job while you were in school?

I had a series of low-paying manual jobs including detasseling, hospital dish room, hospital janitor, etc., which proved to me that I'd better learn to use my brain better.
