The value of Iowa cropland grew an average of 18.5 percent in the year ending Sept. 1, according to a survey by the Realtors Land Institute.
The 18.5 percent increase compared to an increase of 32.6 percent in the year ending September 2011, and an increase of 8.5 percent in the year ended September 2010.
The increase was due to high commodity prices, low long-term interest rates and the limited supply of farmland on the market, according to Realtor Eric Schultz, Muscatine manager for Ruhl Farm&Land. The survey also found values are being driven by a fear of inflation and a lack of stable investment alternatives.
